Is there a searchable archive of the haskell cafe mailing list. The ones listed in the wiki, namely,
gmane (on the wayback machine) mailman (not searchable) and mail-archive (stops in 2015) are not terribly useful for more recent messages. I have searched for this, but not found it. Any pointers. Thanks.
Best wishes,
Henry Laxen

Hello Henry,

maybe you can leverage your favourite search engine [like this](https://duckduckgo.com/?q=site%3Amail.haskell.org+traversal+with+an+arrow&t=hs&va=l&ia=web)? Not perfect, but latest threads are there.

Thanks Francesco, that is a good idea, but in my search (for messages I’ve written) it returns no results.

Are they present [in the archives](https://mail.haskell.org/pipermail/haskell-cafe/)? Can you give a specific example?

Maybe some `robots.txt` setting is preventing crawling.

Your “site:mail.haskell.org” idea works with google, though it doesn’t find all of the messages. It didn’t (actually it did) work with duckduckgo, it just found no results.
Yes, they are certainly present in the archives, but that can only be searched a month at a time, a rather daunting process since there are ~ 22 \* 12 months to look through. I used to use gmane in the past, which worked wonderfully, but alas has gone away.
**Solved:** More searching has pointed me to [markmail](https://markmail.org/) which has a very nice interface and provided me with all the results I was looking for.
Now I will attempt to update the haskell wiki page with this new info. Thanks so much for your suggestions Francesco.
Best wishes,
Henry Laxen

Another option: connect to the [news.gmane.io](http://news.gmane.io) NNTP server with a newsreader like Thunderbird, subscribe to the gmane.comp.lang.haskell.cafe newsgroup, tell it to download all messages, and use Thunderbird’s search. Very efficient.

This is a great tip, at least for headers, I just tried it. But Gmane aborts the connection after downloading like 100 messages, at least for me.

And it doesn’t seem to cover what’s on Don Stewart’s Haskell archive: [https://web.archive.org/web/20151208175102/http://code.haskell.org/~dons/haskell-1990-2000/threads.html](https://web.archive.org/web/20151208175102/http://code.haskell.org/~dons/haskell-1990-2000/threads.html)

Or maybe I just haven’t found the right newsgroup name?

It’s working normally for me just now. Perhaps newsgroup → right click → Properties has something helpful ?

I think

- That’s the general “Haskell” mailing list

- The corresponding gmane newsgroup is gmane.comp.lang.haskell.general. This has the messages since 2000-10-09.

- The official mail list archive is [https://mail.haskell.org/pipermail/haskell/](https://mail.haskell.org/pipermail/haskell/). This too is missing most messages before 2000-10-09. That’s when @simonmar moved the mail list from majordomo to mailman, see [Mailing list software changing](https://mail.haskell.org/pipermail/haskell/2000-October/006127.html) .

It’s a pity to be missing that older content. Probably if you contact the maintainers of [mail.haskell.org](http://mail.haskell.org), and perhaps ask here and on the haskell[-cafe] list who has a full archive of the list, the missing content can be imported to [https://mail.haskell.org/pipermail/haskell/](https://mail.haskell.org/pipermail/haskell/). (Ideally for haskell-cafe too, if applicable.)

And after that, the older content could probably be imported to the gmane newsgroup too. At least, that used to be possible. ([https://admin.gmane.io](https://admin.gmane.io) → [haskell@haskell.org](mailto:haskell@haskell.org) → Request data update)
