I’d just add that while some of the decisions may very well be worrying at times it’s important to resist the urge to add more “checks and balances”.

While these things may make sense in some settings, usually much larger organizations, Haskell is too small IMHO to shoulder any more administrative machinery, rules and regulations, than what we have right now.

I’ve mostly refrained from community discussions as I’m on a bit of a sabbatical from open source for a bit as I deal with some personal stuff.

That said, I felt compelled to chime in on this one.

It’s true, the HF is a flawed organization (I was a flawed ED, for that matter) and the Haskell community is facing many challenges. Despite these flaws, my personal view is that the HF is net-good and I intend to help and volunteer when I get back on the open source wagon.

Even if the HF renamed itself, or somehow became “not official” (whatever that would look like), it wouldn’t change much because the HF doesn’t “control” very much at all! The HF is really about coordination and community. As @LaurentRDC pointed out, organizing events and coordinating between various stakeholders is real work that improves the Haskell community, regardless of the name of the org that does it.

There’s good criticism in this thread and there’s a lot to learn from it. I just don’t believe that the solution is to throw the baby out with the bath water. Let’s improve things together.

Something I left out earlier that I should have mentioned, is that while I feel interest in Haskell has waned and I at least _feel_ the community has shrunk somewhat, I also feel that some of the best work we’ve seen around tooling at least has been seen in the past few years. I don’t think that happens by accident, we’ve seen quite a lot of work to corral people together to focus work on tools like HLS and GHC, and have seen amazing work on various tools for debugging and profiling. In many ways the community has built the things people told us were missing years ago. I think in many ways the community, at least from a code and project perspective, is much stronger than it used to be. So a big thank you to any and everyone involved in making that happen, I try to call it out whenever I see announcements for new tools and released because I know it often goes un(vocally)appreciated.

I do think as a community we still struggle to band together to work on larger projects, much more than some other language communities, and I’d love to know why that is so we can help improve it.
