Can a pure shell be a sensible default for Stack's Nix integration on macOS

The motivation for the following question is Stack #3650. In 2015, Stack 1.0.0 made a pure shell the default for its Nix integration, with the exception of OSX (citing ‘locale problems’ that were ‘soon to be resolved’). A couple of years later, a Stack user asked if there was any reason for OSX/macOS to be treated differently from Linux - they had not experienced any problems with a pure shell on macOS. In 2024, I am asking the same question, hoping to close the issue one way or another: can a pure shell be a sensible default on macOS?
