Discourse update and new hosting

As many of you know, Discourse has been migrated away from our previous hosting platform and is now hosted by the Discourse team directly. This migration coincided with an update to the Discourse platform.

There are two significant changes worth knowing about:

  • Social logins (github/gitlab/etc): Social logins are currently not working as normal, though there is hope that they will again in the future. The solution is to request a login email. However, if you do not receive a login email, you might have to wait a day before you try again (see next point).

  • Email limits: Discourse does not allow us to use our previous email setup that had no email limits, and we are now consistently hitting the daily email limit. We might need to change some default email settings so that we generate fewer emails. If we do change any of these settings, we will of course let you know.

Otherwise, things should be back to normal!

Let’s take a moment to thank the Discourse team for hosting our community space!

I visit the web site quite often, so I’ve turned off all email notifications.

Is this donated hosting ?

Thanks for the update, and thanks Discourse team!

I remember some people are mainly using this site as a mailing list (presumably for better accessibility), so I think it would be very good to get rid of the limit.

Thanks to the Discourse team and to those involved in administering this site!

On the mailing list point, I very much appreciate the way Discourse mailing list mode lets me keep on top of discussions via my mail client. So I’m hopeful that email functionality can be retained. I guess I’m getting old…
