After taking a break for some years I revisited this problem. I built
GHC 4.08.2 with GCC 2.95 which is from the same era and has no problem
with the odd C code.

Thanks for pointing this out. Being able to Bootstrap GHC would be great indeed. The approach of loading the GHC sources into Hugs is … well, maybe just the right amount of bold to get it working :slight_smile:

…and STGHugs at that! I dimly recall trying to do that many years ago for some reason: it was beyond my skills (and perhaps my patience ;-) at that distant time - well done, Ricardo Wurmus!

Just wondering: would this or similar work be of interest to the Software Heritage project?
