PayPal donations disabled?

PayPal sent me an email saying “Your automatic payment did not go through. We’ve tried to process your automatic payment several times, and it is now past the original due date. You should contact Haskell.org, Inc. to pay what you owe.” And when I go to Sponsorship and click “donate”, I see “This organization is currently ineligible to receive donations”, so it looks like the problem is on the Haskell Foundation side, not on my end.

What’s going on? I guess PayPal incorrectly flagged the account as fraudulent or something?

I’m working on sorting this out, hopefully it’ll be available again soon.

Sorry for the trouble!

Same issue here. Side question: is there (still) a difference between donating to Haskell.org and the Haskell Foundation? Is either one preferable?

The short answer is that when you donate to Haskell.org you are donating to the Haskell Foundation.

The longer explanation is that when you donate to Haskell.org, you are donating to the not-for-profit corporation Haskell.org, Inc., which operates under the name the ‘Haskell Foundation’.

Haskell Foundation, Inc., another not-for-profit corporation, with identical purposes and bylaws, is dormant. While it exists, it protects the name.

The plan of the boards of directors of both corporations (who are the same people in each case) is that, in due course, Haskell Foundation, Inc. will cease to exist as a corporation and Haskell.org, Inc. (renamed Haskell Foundation, Inc.) will be the surviving corporation. The legal steps required to implement that are taking a little while to be implemented.

We’ve now shifted the donation mechanism away from Paypal and to Donorbox/Stripe.

It’s currently live on our website, see here, but it’s untested! If anyone wants to be the first to test the new donation flow, you’d be helping in two ways, financially and QA

Sorry for the issue with Paypal, looks like we weren’t alone in having issues. It did serve us well while it lasted, but Donorbox is likely to be a better fit long-term anyway.

I’ve tested it with a modest sum. If that has worked, I suggest the community move to stress testing - say 1,000 Haskellers each donating USD 5/month  :coffee:

I received a lovely thank you email - with my very own, machine-crafted receipt number and a beautiful time and date stamp. But more importantly, did the Foundation receive the lolly?
