Artificial (various engineering positions)

We’re hiring again! We’re expanding our engineering team substantially.

About us

Artificial is a leading UK-based Insurtech company. Our technology enables some of the world’s largest insurers to write complex risks better and faster. This reduces costs both for end customers and underwriters alike, a win-win. We have built a cool DSL to rapidly and robustly model insurance contracts and a platform around it that enables capturing and processing risks in a highly automated fashion

Our team is fully remote with some people close to our London office in the City working from there on occasion. The choice is yours.

:index_pointing_up: Note: We are able to hire people with a right to work in specific countries, see below.

UPDATE: I now have updates regarding the country list:

  • Via branches: UK, Poland
  • Via intermediary, these have been green-lit: Estonia, Spain
  • The following countries may end up being green-lit: Portugal, Greece, Hungary

Here are the roles we’re excited to fill

  1. Product Engineering
    1. Product Engineer - Artificial Labs Ltd
    2. Senior Product Engineer - Artificial Labs Ltd
    3. Lead Product Engineer - Artificial Labs Ltd
  2. Site Reliability Engineering (see SRE book)
    1. Security Engineer - Artificial Labs Ltd
    2. Site Reliability Engineer - Artificial Labs Ltd
    3. Lead Site Reliability Engineer - Artificial Labs Ltd

Choosing:

  • Product: If you’re not sure about which of the product ones to apply for, pick one and we’ll move you around appropriately.
  • SRE: Only apply to the SRE roles if you have a strong interest and background in that area (infra, security, AWS, IaC, etc). Our culture is biased heavily towards Haskellers or Haskell-adjacent doing our infra/ops.

Candidates will be assessed based on a progression framework we have internally (will publish down the line), put into levels 1, 2 and 3, across three categories: building (technical understanding, craft), execution (do you ship and ship the right thing) and supporting (well being, personal growth, org design). They roughly correspond to junior, senior and lead/manager, in other orgs, but are more clearly defined in relation to eachother.

@chrisdone On the webpage I can only see links to positions listed in the UK. Should I use those to apply from Poland?
There’s a checkbox about being in the UK, and I don’t want to be automatically rejected  .

Yes, please! I’ll see about updating that question on the ads.

Chris, what are the pay scales for the roles in the UK and in Poland?

My startup has been teaching a number of people haskell and we have some members of our community who I think would be great for this position that I would like to recommend. Could I email their resumes?

Not right now, thank you. :folded_hands:

Hey Chris :waving_hand:
Thanks for posting this - I’m interested in the SRE role.

I’ve been working in DevOps / SRE for 10+ years, mostly in finance and insurance-style platforms. Lots of AWS, IaC, Kubernetes, observability, incident response, and building infra the “software engineering way”.

The DSL angle and Haskell-adjacent infra culture sound great — I’ve worked in teams where FP ideas heavily influenced how we built and operated systems, and that mindset really clicks for me.

Happy to chat or share more details if useful.
Robert

Hi everyone :waving_hand:
I’m looking for entry-level roles related to functional programming and formal methods.

I recently came across Artificial, a UK-based insurtech working with a DSL for insurance contracts, which sounds very aligned with my interests.

I’m currently based in France and wanted to ask whether anyone knows of roles available from France, or teams open to relocation with visa sponsorship. I’m flexible about moving countries if sponsorship is available.

Thanks Chris, what does that end up being in real-world money amounts?

What are “scale-up” rates?
